The Evolution And Revolution Of Sports Journalism In Kumasi

Kumasi is always seen as the hub of Sports in de county and no doubt about it. The best sports journalists most often had their training in Kumasi that’s why there is always a huge competition here.

As Garden City Radio 92.1

was the first de first radio station in Oseikrom as a Broadcasting company owned by government, most programs were based on religious, social and news bulletins in the early 90’s.

Then came the first privately owned in Kumasi called Otec 102.9 fm

During those times sports was just about news and football commentary. From the 1960’s and 70’s there was a Legendary late commentator called Harry Thompson who was working for GBC Accra and then came the Joe Lartey’s, Late Nii Nortey Duah’s, Kwabena Agyepong’s, Kwabena Yeboah’s, Nii Lante Vanderpuye’s and others.

In 1995, Multimedia company came on board with Luv 99.5fm, Radio Mercury in 1997, Fox fm in 1999.

During all these days sports programs were just aired in News bulletins. These were de days of Legendary Somtyma Otuo Boada Acheampong then a student at Legon, who most often comes n present sports news on Mercury, Ashebwe had a stint with Luv fm at that time and late Christopher Opoku Columbus, Kwabena Gyamfi aka Joe Laka was introduced on radio first by Ashebwe on Luv fm.

Sports journalism and sports programs made groundbreaking barriers in 1999 when they shifted from just news to main shows of about one hour and minutes added. As an industry watcher Fox fm made me see the greatest ever sports team ever in the Garden City. When de Legendary Somtyma Otuo Acheampong was the head, Joe Laka, Richard Osei Oware aka Extra, the Wizard and my name sake Awal Mohammed the Historian, Charles Afedzi aka Offensive and certain Zigma who I hrd is now based in USA. Later on Kwame Anokye came on board.

Around de early 2000’s and 2001’s there was a certain Patrick Osei Agyemang aka Songo the Fireman at Radio Link in Kumasi Polytechnic.

My current best football analyst Eugene Adu Poku aka Striker was introduced into de industry by Songo. Later on moved to Luv, had some working relationship with Dela and Abass Caesar formerly of Zuria fm.

In those same periods, Garde City Radio were making a lot of strides in de industry with de likes Dr Danny Owusu Ansah currently a a Lecturer at KNUST and Frederick Acheampong.

Around 2003 then came de likes of Invincible fm, Ash Fm

that’s where I began to hear about a whiz who was destined to blossom in de industry called Bright Kankam Boadu and main man Patrick B. K. Apreku aka Man Aprek. Kapital Radio with de likes of Listowel Yesu Bukasson, Kwame Mickey and a certain lady called Vidash and one other I’ve forgotten her were all around, a certain Benjamin Yamoah came on board later on.

You can’t talk about the industry without including de exploits of de late Yaw Owusu Gaaba, Alook33, Rockson Adjei-Yeboah and the likes at Otec Fm.

I remember when de late Yaw Owusu Gaaba wasn’t given de attention by de Kotoko entourage in 2002 at South Africa when de Fabulous lads were playing Santos cos he’s seen as Hearts fan.

Also during those days Nhyira fm

was around with de likes Honorable Prince Owusu Agyekum, Oteng Appau Panin and Frank Appiah Riijkard. King Edward de slave, Sir Franco Naro were also competing feverishly in de industry then at Radio Mercury.

In 2004 there were groundbreaking moves when Kessben 93.3 fm

came on board. Joe Laka, Awal Mohammed, Richard Osei Oware n Joe Ameen all left Fox fm to join. Kwame Mickey also joined the team from Kapital Radio and a certain Richard Gyamfi was there as de Foreign News presenter.

When Richard Gyamfi left around 2005 Nat of Kapital Radio

was made to replace him. Also in 2006 Frederick Acheampong joined Kessben in 2006.Hello fm also came on board n I remember de days of George Akwasi Amankwaah Marfo aka Spanky T was there, Shamo, Javier Clemente. Later on saw Eugene Adu Poku, Collins Asante Acoustic and Steve Asa Berkoe. Sports listeners were really thrilled around those times when de late Kweku Edusei Kanawu and Alhaji Ali Maradona were representing Hearts n Kotoko respectively.

Zuria fm also came on board in that year 2004 with Abass Caesar leading de team after leaving Luv fm, Abdul Razak was also there around that time. Delali Atease and Kofi Asare de Sports Minister were guys that made huge impact at Luv fm with a certain Asare an AS Roma fan who later joined Ultimate fm.

Around those times Bright Kankam Boadu, Patrick Apreku, Thomas Boakye Agyemang aka Tom Kruger and Moses Antwi Benefo aka P. J Mozeh were all at Fox fm with Otuo Boada Acheampong Somtyma as General Manager and Senior Shamo. In all these times u can’t talk about sports without mentioning a certain Prince Kojo Tawiah Milo, Odenkey n Mr Boateng at Nkosuo Radio. The impact of Adjetei Sowah and Joseph Owusu Ansah’s can’t be left in de media landscape especially Joe’s scoreboard on Garden City Radio.

In 2007 there came another big movement when Angel 96.1 fm

came on board, Joe Laka,Richard Osei Oware left Kessben, Kankam Boadu left Fox, Acoustic n Striker left Hello fm, Kwame Kesse and a certain Historian Amonia the Tagor left Kess Radio and all these formed a strong team. These made Somtyma to replace Joe Laka at Kessben. Fox fm also brought Kwabena Kyere Stuttgart from Accra and Jeffrey Asare. Franco Naro, later Rockson Adjei-Yeboah joined Fox fm while Kweku Ahenkora can’t be forgotten.

A certain Isaac Owusu Ansah who made a lot of strides since 2003 at Invincible fm was also at Ash fm between de middle to late 2000’s was at Ash fm. That’s where I spotted King Eben, Eric Agyemang Action, Addai Mununkum n George de Icon who later came on board. Also a certain Don Summer was introduced at Kessben by Somtyma in 2009 and he made a good a mark before leaving to London and later joined Angel fm with Sir Joe Laka. When Somtyma left Kessben Fm KOD stepped in as a host when he switched from Djing to sports hosting as de likes of Awal, Mickey, Ahenkora, Nana Egyir n Siasia bin part of the team.

Also Metro fm

came around with de Academic n Matured Sports with PJ, Franco Naro, Freeman, Man Aprek, Ike Owusu Ansah,OB Trice. Later Atta Poku, Bismark Owusu Bempah aka Ayala n Andy Kerm came on. In 2013 Joe Laka, Striker n Jeff all left Angel fm. So what happened was Kwabena Yeboah was made to come back to Kumasi on de request of Dr Kwaku Oteng to be doing de programs with Don Summer who introduced Sadick Obama as a producer. Osei Oware n Bkb came back.

They had wanted to include a certain Richardo Pepe Suarez n PKay’s Corner Opoku Afriyie but Pkay’s own didn’t go through. That year saw the coming of Sadick Obama who also blossomed into greatness.

In 2015 Bright Kankam Boadu, Richard Osei Oware, Pepe Suarez all left Angel n joined Nhyira fm with Sadik Obama leaving earlier as he joined Atinka Media Village in Accra. This promoted Don Summer as he brought on board Kwame Dela de Fishbone, Oscar, Kofi Owusu Jerry. Dove 89.5fm

metamorphosize into Sikka fm around that time with Somtyma, Snr Shamo, Harry Awuah, Super Obondede, Dennis Gucci Osei-nimo Annor, Copper Lebarante, Isaac Ossae Emmanuel, Super Sub Koffok, Mickey Andoh were all there and that’s where my Radio career stated in Kumasi here.

Silver fm

also came on board with King Eben, PKay’s Corner, OB Trice, Obondede, Osafo Addo as they made a lot of strides in the in the industry. In December 2015, Joe Laka came back into Radio with Eugene Adu Poku, Jeffrey Asare, Atta Poku with Kweku Edilson often joining at times. Under few months these squad entirely moved back to Kessben fm in 2016. Kwaku Ahenkora made a groundbreaking move to Adehye3 fm around that time with Dennis Gucci, Bright Yeboah Taylor and Bismark Owusu Bempah and Nuhu Adams. They really served de Garden City well with their mouthwatering sports shows with Yaw Appiah aka Sanogo.

Oyerepa fm

was also in around 2017 when Sammy Acheampong, Latest Intelligence Little King, Pepe Suarez n later Striker also joined. When Somtyma resigned from Sikka fm he joined Oyerepa n these saw de movement of Pepe Suarez, Sammy Acheampong, Little King . Harry Awuah n Siasia came on board as Ricky Acheampong was maintained. This also saw de coming in of Baba Issah de Sports Lawyer. In all these years Osei Akoto Kanu was also making a huge impact at Otec with Sir Skandy, Ricky before joined Oyerepa n Mr Pobi.

A lot of people have contributed their quota in de industry. U can’t forget Nana Kwame Real Bengarzi Marfoh, Abraham Alokore and Fentuo Tahiru at Ultimate 106.9fm, Governor, Debator, Shevechenko, El Lizato and Ralph Sarkodie at Abusua fm, Gaius Nkansah Emmanuel, Crusader, Lateef Abdul Sadick, Nketiah and myself then at Ahoto 92.5fm.

The latest to join de fray is Wontumi 101.3fm

with King Eben, Atta Poku, Edilson, Abou Diaby not forgetting Shaker. Pure 95.7 fm with Bob, OB Trice, Christian Edusei, Andy Kacylas n BYT.

If you check de industry very well, a lot of people are making strides, the likes Akomeah Gyamfi Michael Messiah of Otec can’t be forgotten, Garba Rabiu, Jude all of Fox fm, Nana Egyir, Ralph Sarkodie all of Akoma fm, Bismark, Abdul Wadud all of Zuria fm. Looking at the industry de future seems bright but what our guys must eschew is cronyism. This will help promote a lot of talented sports journalists and analysts in de Garden City of de Golden Kingdom.
